Attorney Murrough O'Brien

Mr. O’Brien has been a lawyer in private practice in Portland for over 30 years. A graduate of Harvard College, he served in the Navy and worked as a news reporter before attending the University of Maine School of Law. Because of his excellent writing skills he was a writing instructor at the school in his third year and also had the third highest score on the Maine bar exam in 1975.

Following his graduation Mr. O’Brien did trial work in various areas of law. He has specialized in representing disability claimants since the early 1990's. Because of his expertise in social security disability law, other lawyers attend his annual seminars teaching how to successfully prepare and present these cases.

For more than a decade Mr. O’Brien served as executive secretary to the Maine Judicial Council, Planning agency for the Maine court system and frequently represented its interests before the legislature. He also served for several years as the president of Youth and Family Outreach, a Portland, Maine social service agency. Since 2005 he has been of counsel to Jackson & MacNichol, participating both in preparing and handling hearings and also writing appellate pleadings for federal court appeals.
